This scenic route concept was the brain child of two innovators in 1996 and a quite separate initiative to the NCN though it does share some sections of it. “It was set up to establish, promote and sustain a nationwide cycling route with regeneration its purpose, the countryside and heritage its focus. It meanders around the byways of Britain and includes numerous loops”. There are some 72 brown-signed miles in Northumberland for which a map has been prepared. Unfortunately the National Byway is never promoted and consequently isn’t a high profile cycling route.
